This exhibition shows my monoprints together with collages made from
them, both recent and from the 1970s. The prints explore the interplay
of randomness and control. I print directly from a roller to the paper,
after manipulating the ink on the roller. The results are controlled
structures before a random background. Through experiment and a
corresponding refinement of my skills I use the random elements to guide
my phantasy and intuition, developing them into controlled, planned
structures.
The title is derived from the German word "Monotypie" which means
"monoprint". The title has been set in the Canadian bilingual way for
the case that one of the words is both English and French. The fact that
here both words are, creates a symmetry that mirrors the many symmetries
(obvious or subtle) that occur in the hanging and in the prints
themselves.
